Student democracy revitalised

It is anticipated that a record number of students will vote next week (w/c MAR 15) as candidates compete for students’ votes around university campuses.

The student funding review is a hot topic amongst students, as lobbying to retain the cap on tuition fees is a reoccurring theme amongst candidates' manifestos. With Wolverhampton’s widening participation agenda, students are all too aware of the effect an increase in fees could have on the student body.

The Students’ Union is hoping to beat last year’s record of 2,250 votes, as even more candidate’s stand for full-time and part-time positions within the Union and delegate positions for April’s National Union of Students (NUS) Annual Conference.

Chair of the Unions’ Elections Committee, Eric Potts said: “There has been unprecedented interest in the Union elections this year which shows students are committed more than ever to enhancing their student experience.

“In the run-up to a General Election and a nationwide campaign by NUS to encourage students to register to vote, it is clear to see that, at least as far as Wolverhampton students are concerned, democracy is not dead!”

Student voters will be able to make more informed decisions over who they vote for this year, with video manifestos and a high-profile candidates’ Question Time event taking place this Thursday (MAR 11).
