Students debut new opera

23/04/2010

The music department has written and will perform the original opera, titled The Mad Day, with pupils from High Arcal School in Dudley and the English Touring Opera.

The opera will be performed at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, on Tuesday 27 April at 6pm.

The Mad Day was the original working title for The Marriage of Figaro and follows the same cast of characters in the moments leading up to Mozart’s famous opera.

The opera is the culmination of several days work led by the professionals from the English Touring Opera, with creative input from the University students and school pupils.

Anne-Marie Beaumont, Senior Lecturer in Music at the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure, said: "This is a very exciting collaboration bringing together professional musicians with the enthusiasm of high school students. It has been a great learning experience for our music students and promises to be a fun and entertaining performance."

Admission to this performance is free and will be followed by a production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro at 7.30pm by the English Touring Opera. Contact the Grand Theatre box office for ticket prices.
