Spaghetti Junction inspires opening ceremony

Dennie Wilson is working as Artistic Director and Choreographer for the European Gymnastics Championships 2010, which are being held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. She devised performances for the opening ceremony and the medal presentations.

The opening ceremonies for the men’s and women’s finals feature 120 dancers from across the West Midlands. Rehearsals for the unique performance took place at the University’s Walsall Campus.

Senior Lecturer Dennie, from the Dance department of the , said: “Over the past four months I have been devising and developing 'Contract 8', which is the opening ceremony for the championships. The performance takes Birmingham's icon landmark Spaghetti Junction as inspiration to create a mass participation dance involving 120 dancers from across the West Midlands.

“My next opening ceremony work will be working with Great British Wheelchair Basketball to create the opening and closing ceremonies for the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, which will feature men's and women's teams form 22 countries.”

Contract 8 was performed at the opening ceremony for the Men’s Final on Saturday, 24 April and will also be featured on Saturday, May 1 to open the Women's Finals.
