University launches new School

The School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications (LSSC) was officially launched at a special event attended by staff and external guests, including Wolverhampton City councillors Gillian Fellows (Cabinet Member for Schools) and Christine Mills (Cabinet Member for Children and Young People).

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Caroline Gipps, and Dean of School, Dr Judith Burnett, gave speeches at the launch on Wednesday (October 28).

The School also organised a photography competition for students themed around what student life means to them. Four winners, Kam Mullah, Dominika Tasarz-Sochacka, Maria Healy and Benjamin Adsett were selected and first prize went to Kam Mullah who won a signed Wolves football. Other prizes included cinema tickets, John Smith book tokens, and a chance to appear as a guest on the local community radio station WCR FM.

Dr Judith Burnett said: “This vibrant international School offers tremendous opportunities to business, the public sector and the communities of the region to expand their horizons, make great connections, and benefit from the University of Wolverhampton.”

Representatives from the Lighthouse Media Centre; the Wolverhampton Community Radio (WCR FM); Wolverhampton Citizens Advice Bureau; the Royal Military Police and from the West Midlands police constabulary; knowledge transfer partnerships and local law firms also attended the launch.

LSSC brings together the former School of Legal Studies and School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences, and currently has around 4500 students including students studying overseas in Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Students can study a range of courses at the School at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including Criminology and Criminal Justice; Law including law qualifying programme; Film, Broadcasting and Media Studies; Social Policy, Religious Studies and Social Sciences; History, Politics and War Studies; and World and Sign Languages including English as a second language, and English for teachers and trainers.

The School did very well in the recent national research assessment exercise (RAE 2008), and houses some of the most successful academics in the region in the areas of law, the humanities, and social sciences.
