New recognition for volunteering

25/11/2008

Active Volunteers and the Students’ Union have joined forces to introduce the Award and a Volunteering Certificate to acknowledge the importance of volunteering.

The Volunteer of the Year Award is being launched to celebrate outstanding contribution to the community. To be eligible for the award, which is sponsored by The Midcounties Co-operative, students must complete a minimum of 50 hours volunteering and demonstrate commitment, drive, and an ability to make a difference.

The certificate covers all volunteering carried out, whether a student completes just a few hours of volunteering or is a long-term volunteer who commits a large proportion of their time to volunteering.

Pat Green, Co-ordinator for Active Volunteers, said: “The Volunteer of the Year award and Volunteering Certificate recognise the achievements and transferable skills developed which enhance employability. Certificates will be recorded on students’ transcripts when they graduate, demonstrating the additional experience gained, alongside academic achievements.”

Nominations for the Volunteer of the Year award will be open from January 2009. The Finalists and the Award winner will be announced at an Awards ceremony at the end of the summer term.
