Centre for Health and Social Care Improvement - CHSCI

The Centre for Health and Social Care Improvement (CHSCI) is concerned with making sure that everybody is able to receive excellent health and social care in a way that is responsive to them.

Its research works to ensure quality when services are planned and delivered, both in the UK and internationally, and that the voice of the public is included in this process. It also supports health and social care professionals in both their education and professional practice, to continuously improve the way care is given.

Impacts

Research at CHSCI is focussed on:

  • prolonging life
  • preventing disease
  • promoting health and social wellbeing developing policies, professional practices and types of care
  • making sure patients and the public have a say in the way health and social services are put together

Research areas

There are four key themes to CHSCI’s work:

Inequalities and Global Issues in Health and Social Welfare – what causes disparities in health and social welfare and what are the consequences for people’s quality of life? Here researchers look at inequality in health and social care among different communities and different parts of the country, as well as on a global level.

Mental Health and Long Term Conditions – what are the challenges of living with a long-term illness or mental health problems? Research in this area investigates the causes of such conditions, along with the impact they have on people’s health care, the support they need, independence and quality of life.

Quality and Partnerships in Health and Social Care Practice - seeking to shape both health and social care services and the people that work in them, researchers in this theme are focussed on improving services, involving patients in their care, creating partnerships across different organisations and influencing health-related professions.

Public Health and Integrated Care - with no two individuals the same, how can we make sure people get the best care possible in a way that suits them? This theme looks at how different organisations can work together to provide health and social care that is truly responsive to the individual, family and community.
