Undergraduate FAQs

Undergraduate degrees are typically the next academic qualification students achieve once completing their A-levels or equivalent, and the first degrees students can study. 

They provide students with the foundational understanding of a subject which will support them when looking for a career in their desired field. Students may also decide to develop their knowledge in a postgraduate course. Undergraduate degrees usually last three years.

There are several types of undergraduate degree, including:

  • Bachelor's degrees: A Bachelor’s degree involves studying one or two subjects in detail, and is the most common type of undergraduate course. There are several categories of Bachelor’s degree:
    • Bachelor of Arts (BA)
    • Bachelor of Science (BSc)
    • Bachelor of Education (BEd)
    • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng)
    • Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
    • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB)

  • Foundation year/foundation diplomas: A one-year introductory qualification designed for students who don't meet the entry requirements for a Bachelor's degree. Completion of a foundation year allows students to begin a Bachelor's degree.
  • Foundation degrees: Different to a foundation year or foundation diploma, a foundation degree is a level 5 qualification with an emphasis on practice-based learning.
  • Top-up degrees: Top-up degrees upgrade level 5 qualifications, like foundation degrees, to a full Bachelor's degree.
  • Higher National Certificate (HNC): HNCs are one-year undergraduate equivalents to the first year of university. They're designed to help students either gain the knowledge and skills for a specific career or move into the second year of a Bachelor's degree.
  • Higher National Diploma (HND): HNDs are similar to HNCs, but are equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor's degree. Completing an HND will help students gain practical skills related to their desired career while allowing them to enter the third year of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE): CertHEs are level 4 vocational qualifications equivalent to the first year of a Bachelor's degree. They focus on a particular profession or academic subject, and can help students progress into further study.
  • Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE): DipHEs are level 5 qualifications equivalent to an HND or two years of a Bachelor's degree. Upon completion, students can progress to the final year of a Bachelor’s degree.

Certificate of Continuing Education (CertCE): CertCEs equate to 60 undergraduate degree credits at level 4 or 5. Designed for those looking to get some higher education, CertCEs can develop into a full undergraduate degree.

Undergraduate degrees, such as Bachelor's degrees, are the first degrees students will study for in higher education. Postgraduate degrees, such as Master’s courses, postgraduate certificates, and postgraduate diplomas, are courses students can study for after completion of their undergraduate course.
